Saturday 25th October, off road Claygate Cricket Club

Four riders met at Nonsuch meeting point this morning on an overcast, but still day. Hardly a breath of wind, which had led to mist in places on my drive over. Nevertheless a reasonable morning for Tracy Caudle, Bill Kent, Ed Pegg and me to perambulate the fine, muddy countryside of Surrey.

Our route: Ewell, Horton Country Park, west side of Epsom Common, across the A24 south of Malden Rushett and into Prince’s Coverts. The latter area was very muddy as the loggers had been in and made brown porridge for all to enjoy! Once past this I headed towards Claygate via Lime Kiln Woods, Birch Woods and Arbrook Common.

A very enjoyable, leisurely elevenses stop with good food. A normally quiet venue, but Halloween is approaching and everyone’s getting in on the act, and so we were treated to the fun of the kids’ fancy dress competition – the Dinosaur won!

As we departed the sun began to shine and improved the burning colours of the autumn leaves along our way. The route back was fairly straight forward – Claygate Common, Barwell Farm Lane, over the A3 at South Chessington and back into Horton Country Park, where I headed back to the car park and the other three headed back to Cheam.
