Saturday 1st March, off road, ‘Baton’ Ride

Seven riders at the meeting point in Nonsuch Park; five were hiding in the cafe due to the cold, damp and foggy conditions. Bill Kent, myself, Ed Pegg, Adam Domaingue, and Bill Martin were all found in the cafe by Tracy Caudle and Trevor Kite when they arrived.

This was a ‘Baton’ ride, meaning each rider would lead for around twenty minutes then the next would take over leading in whatever direction they wished. Bill Martin started and then it was reverse alphabetically by Christian name. And so we ended up in the burbs of Epsom, Epsom Downs, Epsom Common, Ashtead Park, Staine Street, and Givon’s Grove before finally dropping into Leatherhead for elevenses, and right on time – the sun broke through and the fog lifted as we arrived.

The tea stop was in the heart of Leatherhead in the end, a nice family run cafe, good food and reasonably priced.

Adam led the route back through the ‘burbs of Leatherhead, over the M25 and once again onto another section of Epsom Common. Soon after I left the group at Horton, and they headed back to Cheam etc.
