Saturday 12th August 2017 – Sheppey AwayDay

Weather forecast for the weekend is not promising so we will review on the morning but, following the successful Hoo AwayDay Saturday ride, we are making another sortie into Kent territory rarely visited, the Isle of Sheppey.  Leave Cheam 0900 in Dave’s van and Micks car. Meet at Newington Station car park 1015.

Up station road, left into London Road, left into Church lane and under railway bridge, left at bottom into Boxted Lane direction Upchurch, straight across into Holywell lane, at T junction on entry into Upchurch (2m) Right into Halstow Lane  direction of Lower Halstow (3m)  village into Sheerness Road skirting southern bank of River Medway, continue onto Strawberry Hill Lane, left into Old Ferry Lane, Left and under big new bridge into lower old bridge and take B2331 that skirts the new A281 to cross The Swale (6m) onto The Isle of Sheppey. Proceed to junction with A2500 where right in direction Minster.  Take first on left onto Barton Hill Drive into Minster (9m) where Right at T-junction onto B2008 towards Eastchurch. On outskirts of Minster, at Pigtail Corner, fork left into Plough Road to Warden road and Church Road to Eastchurch High Street (12)  where left to B2231 where left in direction of Leysdown. Within 2 miles turn Right off B2231 into Ferry Road onto The Isle of Harty and follow road down to The Old Ferry Inn (17m) for lunch.

Return on Ferry Road lane to B2231 (21m) where right in direction of Leysdown but after a couple of miles turn left onto Warden Bay Road and into Holiday village and then left and right onto Thornhill Road to Warden Point. (23)  Right onto pathway to crumbling cliff (not too close!) for a look, then return onto Warden Road and at T-junction Right onto Plough Road in direction of Minster to Pigtail corner where rejoin B2008 to Minster. (28m)  Left onto Barton Hill Drive to Lower Road, A2500, where right to junction with B2330 and A249. Left onto B2330 alongside A249 to cross over The Swale by the older smaller bridge (31m). On the western side take Right onto Old Ferry Road and then right again onto Raspberry Hill Road and Sheerness Road to Lower Halstow (36m) where left into Vicarage Lane, Wardwell lane and Church lane back into Newington High Street. Right and first right again into Station Road to Newington Station car park (38m).
